M5 Details

Originally sold in 91 to a Dr. Clayborn & Danielle Shelton of Los Angeles. Delivered at Bob Smith BMW, Canoga Park, California. I know Clay Shelton and still talk to him a few times a year. It was his daily driver from 1991 to 2000. From 2000 to 2005 it only went out on special occasions since he replaced it with a new one.
In 3/06 my friends Quinn and Ryan Hogan ( Father & Son BMW nuts )Bought the M5 from Clay Shelton and had it shipped from LA to New Hampshire . They used it strictly on weekends as the mileage history will indicate. In 4/08 I bought out the Hogan's interest in the car since they never had time to enjoy the M5.
In 11/07 Ryan tapped a deer that was crossing a road. The damage was a good dent to the front of the hood and and a kink in the passenger side front fender. The repairs were easily fixed w/o having to replace the hood or the fender. The matching VIN sticker is still on the OEM hood and left fender. This is the only accident the car ever sustained. All the lines and crumple zones are un-breached which are tell-tale to how solid the car is.
The Hogan's are also BMWCCA members and spent a great deal of money maintaining the M5. They are a well off family and they don't cut corners as the service records indicate.
The M5 comes with a complete service history from day 1 to its last full tune-up which was performed 4/09. During this tune-up at John Dwyers shop in Old Saybrook, CT, a full valve adjustment was performed. Before and after tolerances were noted and recorded. IIRC, 4 shims were needed.
I had the settings done to .28 which was the M5Boards recommended setting.
Maintenance is all done. It needs nothing until the next oil change.
Its lived on Mobil 1 full synthetic since it was rebuilt. During break-in of the rebuild, Kendall Gt2050 w/ additive was used. This is a conventional hi grade oil. At 3500 miles, Mobil 1 was used.
The engine has approximately 128K on it since it was rebuilt. Its got extremely strong compression on all 6. Wet Leakdown is better than 10%.
The Getrag 5 speed is in outstanding condition. Shifts are crisp, smooth and no whining in any gear. Neutral to 1st goes in like butter as does Reverse.
The high performance clutch grabs as it should, pedal effort is solid and will last a very,very long time if not abused. Heck, it probably would still last a long time if abused.
The Guibo is fairly new as is the driveshaft ( re-man unit ). ..so the feel of input is instantaneous.
Cold starts are very smooth and quiet. No valve lash or ticking whatsoever.
The chassis itself has 284,320 miles on it. A true testament to the build quality of the E34 M5 and BMW. I can't think of any other maker that can produce a car that can endure this long other than Mercedes Benz.
Every suspension and drivetrain part has been replaced so the car drives and feels like a new M5. Smooth, no rattles, no clunks, nothing.
This car tracks like a race car due to the suspension and tires. It pulls like a high strung train.
Carfax is clean, I have the New York title in my possession.
I am selling it because of a 93 Porsche 993 . I tried to keep both, but I can't, so with the heaviest of hearts I have to say goodbye to this friend.

The car does NOT have shadowline. I used tape on the chrome just to get an idea of what it would look like if I did buy the kit. Tape is off now.

I'll be adding some pics of what it looked like back when I had the stock M System wheels as well as a set of M Parallels.
Also to be added are the images of all the records of service that I've kept in a 3 ring binder in acid free sleeves. Records are comprehensive from the first service in 1991 to the most current valve adjustment and tune-up this Spring as well as the dyno session I had at Pruven Dyno Performance in Milford , Ct.
Just about everything except the body and interior have been refreshed and replaced w/ new parts in the last 3 yrs on this car.
S38 ENGINE
The motor managed to make it to about 170K before the original owner Dr. Glen Shelton decided to get it rebuilt. It had suffered a water pump failure at 125K and never really felt the same even after the head was replaced by Beverly Hills BMW. He mentioned to me that it just didn't pull like it used to so he thought a full rebuild was the best recourse.
To the tune of 9K the top half got all new OEM parts, and the bottom end was refreshed w/ new rod bearings, cylinder walls were honed and the head was decked , crank replaced.
Its got about 128K on it now and it runs like a true beast ! Leakdown is about 9%, avg compression is 182-185 and it dyno'd at 265 whp.
I had the dyno shop cap the pulls at 6500 rpm because it was due for a valve adjustment, so considering the TMS Conforti chip it has in it peaks at 7450 rpm, the car most likely has 272-275 at the wheels now that the valve adjustment has been done. Only 4 valves were off, but it is smoother across the rpm range.
270 whp translates to about 335-340 at the crank.
This S38 will live for a very long time. The block is now hardened into its 5th-6th Heat cycle and will live longer than when it was younger and more prone to expansion/contraction .
The only mod is the Conforti chip.
The motor mounts were replaced this Spring as well.
SUSPENSION & DRIVETRAIN
All the suspension parts are in excellent shape. The rear is a Dinan SLS delete kit ( Dinan springs+ Bilstein Sport shocks). The front are Eibach springs with Bilstein Sport struts w/ fairly new bushings,and Pitman arms along w/ 18 month old front subframe OEM bushings.
Rear subframe mounts were done in 2006 and are still rock solid. There are no clunks or creaks as it goes down the road in normal conditions. There are zero noises or clunks during spirited at edge driving.
The transmission was rebuilt in 2004 . A new clutch and Dinan flywheel were installed at this time. Also refreshed were Guibo unit as well as the driveshaft. These were done at Concord Motorsports in Concord NH. They are a Dinan authorized shop. There are invoices for all the work above.
In the Spring I replaced the OEM radiator with a new performance aftermarket radiator as well as the viscous fan clutch.
The water pump was replaced in 2007 by Concord Motorsports along w/ a new thermostat and 3 hoses.
The car runs cool in all situations , even w/ the AC on full blast.
The OBC works perfectly. The car averages 20 mpg hwy.
The car has no leaks whatsoever. Its been garage kept all its life. The original owner and myself are longtime BMWCCA members. I'm currently a member myself.
EXTERIOR:
The car had its hood,roof,and right side panels repainted. Mostly due to carwash streaks. The original owner who I know, took the car to machine car washes once it got to be 10 yrs old. Repeated trips just wore away and he decided to get the panels that were the worse redone.
Its a good job, he spent about 3K, so its not show level, but more of a presentable-clean level. The car is very deep in its shine.
Because this is a California car, its never seen a flake of snow, and has just about never seen rain. So needless to say, there is zero corrosion.
The hood has a small section where the paint has some micro cracks. This area is to the left of the hood emblem. It'll probably wet sand out , but I was planning on eventually having the hood resprayed so I didn't bother messing with it. The rest of the hood is in great shape, just a few chips and signs of hwy rash. The nose panel is clean. The front airdam valance shows highway wear and is still original paint.
INTERIOR
It Dove gray. Has the typical leather checking on the seats. The color is really not that bad as everyone makes it out to be. Still fairly supple and would be nicer if the Leathertique kit were used on it. All the power seat functions for both front seats work perfectly. This car was a California car so there was no Winter package option. No heated seats.
AC and Heat work perfect ! Recently charged upgraded R134a system w/ no leaks.
All power locks,windows function as they should.
The left and right side mirror switch doesn't work. Needs a new switch. My hands worked great !
Sunroof works perfect. Headliner was redone in 2003, so its like new.
All cluster lights work perfect.
The steering wheel is from a 95 E36 M3 w/ M Sport tri color thread. The wheel is in mint shape. A great upgrade.
The car smells fantastic ! No smoker ever. Has that class M car leather odor. Very pleasant to the senses. Smells like a fast car should.
OTHER UPGRADES AND NEW PARTS
New LCM ( Light Control Module ) in 2006
New OEM Fuel pump in 2005
New instrument cluster control module in 2004
New Steering rack and PS pump hoses+pump in 2005
SSR Comps Type C 18x8.5 and 18x 9.5 forged alloy wheels 17-18 lbs each. 20 ET front 25ET rear. 8mm rear spacers H&R
245 40 18 / 275 35 18 Dunlop DSST's . Tires are at 55-60 % thread depth. They have even wear across the board indicating alignment specs are ideal for the lowered ride height.
Sony CD Headunit w/ Sony 10 disc rear changer.
* Note that the Sony system needs an amp to work as well as rear deck speakers. The previous owner kept both because they were a gift from his wife. I'm not a stereo guy, so I never bothered to get it hooked up. All the wiring is in place. You just need the amp and rear speakers.
I didn't keep the stock Throwing Star M System wheels. I did not care for them and sold them to offset the cost of the SSR's. The spare tire is a M System 17x8 w/ Michelin tire.
You would have to look far and wide to find an M5 as well sorted as mine for under 15K. Its in turn-key condition. It has a current New York state Inspection sticker. Its a very difficult inspection to pass.
You just need gas and a good stretch of road to enjoy this unique once-in a lifetime car.
THINGS IT WILL NEED IN THE FUTURE
-As I mentioned above, it could use a side mirror switch on the door panel.
-It needs door handle gaskets. The ones on the car are cracked
-Fan shroud- I opted not to get one after accidentally running over the one it had. My M3 ran fine w/o one, but its good to get everything back to spec. It takes 5 mins to screw one back on.
